PhoneTray Free
Please note that PhoneTray Free doesn't work when you're online
using dial-up -- only PhoneTray Dialup does. Please download
PhoneTray Dialup if you have dial-up internet.
A. PhoneTray works with broadband connection, but you need a
regular (dial-up) modem because DSL/Cable modems can't detect or
answer phone calls. You will need a regular (dial-up) modem connected
to your phone line in addition to DSL/Cable modem in order to use
PhoneTray. Most computers have internal dial-up modems, look for a
phone line jack on the back of your computer. If you have dial-up
modem, connect it to the phone line. You will be able use your
DSL/Cable modem for internet as you do now, and PhoneTray will be
able to process incoming phone calls using dial-up modem. If you have
DSL please put DSL filter on the line that goes to your dial-up modem
to get reliable Caller ID detection.

A. PhoneTray Free works with VoIP line as with any other phone line.

PhoneTray. Most computers have internal dial-up modems,

dial-up modem.
Back to the list of questions
A. If you are using dial-up to connect to your
internet service provider, PhoneTray Free will not work while
you are online. We have another product
PhoneTray Dialup
designed for dial-up users.
Back to the list of questions
A. If you have Caller ID service from your phone company but all
incoming calls show up with N/A instead of the caller's number, most likely your modem doesn't
support Caller ID when offline (not connected to another modem, e.g.
when online with dialup). Unfortunately there are many modems that
don't support offline Caller ID. All V.92 modems support Caller ID
when online, but offline Caller ID decoding requires additional
hardware parts on a modem, and some modem manufacturers do not
install them to reduce cost.
You can try
other Caller ID software to make sure it's a hardware problem.
Also you can try to update your modem driver. By default Windows
installs generic driver, which may lack Caller ID support. You can
find the newest drivers at modem manufacturer's website. If your modem
was bundled with the PC, try PC manufacturer's web site.
'Fix CID' feature in PhoneTray can help as well. Click on the
PhoneTray icon in the taskbar area in the bottom-right corner of the screen
to bring up PhoneTray window.
Click the Settings button (third button on PhoneTray toolbar). Click
the 'Fix CID' button on the Settings page. PhoneTray will attempt to
detect Caller ID command supported by your modem.

A. Please do the following: Shutdown PhoneTray (right-click on
PhoneTray icon in the taskbar area in the bottom-right corner of the screen and select Shutdown from the pop-up menu).
Navigate to PhoneTray folder (C:\Program Files\Traysoft\PhoneTray\ by
default). Right-click on PhoneTray.exe and select 'Run as
Administrator' then click Allow. PhoneTray will start. Go to the
Settings screen and click 'Fix CID' button.
Back to the list of questions
A. If PhoneTray displays callers’ numbers for local calls but
not for long-distance calls, most likely you have distinctive ringing
for long distance calls (sometimes called long distance call
notification). Distinctive ringing means that your phone rings
differently on long distance calls. Some modems can't decode Caller
ID if distinctive ringing is enabled. Please try to disable
distinctive ringing. To do that you usually can dial *49 from your
phone. If *49 doesn’t work please contact your phone company to
find out how to disable distinctive ringing / long distance call
notification.
Back to the list of questions
A. In some parts of Canada different format of Caller ID
information is used. Please download Fix.Zip and run Fix.exe from the
archive (on Windows Vista choose 'Run as Administrator'). It should say something like '2 registry entries replaced.'
Restart Windows. Please note that this fix is for Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows 2003 or Windows Vista. It doesn't work on Windows 98 or
Windows ME.
Back to the list of questions
A. In order to make PhoneTray zap incoming calls by answering and
playing a voice message to the callers you need to configure what
type of calls you want to zap. Let say you want to automatically zap
all incoming calls from private (blocked) numbers with a message that
says to unblock their number. Click on the PhoneTray icon in the
taskbar area in the bottom-right corner of the screen to bring up PhoneTray window. Click the Privacy Manager
button (second button on PhoneTray toolbar). Click on Private
Number in the list. Bellow the list you will see call handling
settings for the 'Private Number' calls. Check 'Zap' Call checkbox at
the bottom and select Automatically. To select a message that callers
will hear click the Zap Message Select button (the one with ... to
the right of the 'Zap Message' box) and browse for a Blocked.wav file. You
can click Play button to play selected message on your computer
speakers. Now PhoneTray should answer all calls from private numbers,
play a message and disconnect. If you select Manually instead of
Automatically PhoneTray will popup Zap dialog on every incoming call
from private numbers. Zap dialog has a button that you can click to
zap a call. You should repeat this procedure for all types of calls
you want to zap - N/A, Out of Area etc. You can zap specific
numbers as well: click Add Number button and type in a number. The
number will appear in the list and you will be able to configure it
the same way. If PhoneTray answers the calls but doesn't play selected
message, most likely your modem doesn't support voice. To check if
PhoneTray has detected voice support please click the Settings button.
Your modem should be listed in the 'Lines to monitor' list with Ready -
Yes and Voice - Yes. If it says No in the Voice column, your modem
doesn't support voice. Without voice support PhoneTray will zap the
calls but will be unable to play voice message to the caller.

A. Unfortunately PhoneTray can't show a second call when you are on
the phone. Modems support Call Waiting ID only when connected to
another modem (for example when online with dial-up). Modems cannot
obtain Caller ID when a second call is coming during regular (voice)
call. Only expensive telephony boards can do that.
Back to the list of questions
